This video offers an overview of the grader, importance and relevance of Canada`s Parliament, with a specific focus on the House of Commons. Students will gain insight into the role of Members of Parliament, and the basic structure and functions of the House of Commons.
About Judy A. SgroSince 1999, Judy Sgro has, as the Liberal MP for Humber River – Black Creek (formerly York West), advanced an agenda that is progressive and respectful of human rights, equality, and religious freedom.
Prior to federal politics, Judy represented her community on the North York City Council (1987 to 1994) and Toronto City Council (1995 to 1998) where she focused on poverty and crime reduction. It was this attachment to people that led Judy to Ottawa.
In Parliament, Judy developed national solutions to local problems. As Chair of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Urban Issues, she shaped policy on social housing, the creation of the gas tax rebate, and the promotion of human rights and religious freedoms. As Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Judy championed family re-unification and promoted systemic fairness.
In opposition, Judy focused on issues as the Official Opposition Critic for Seniors and Pensions, the Critic for Veterans Affairs, the Critic for the Status of Women, and as the Liberal Industry Critic by releasing a Pension Reform White Paper, a study on Sexual Harassment in the RCMP, and a Pension Bill of Rights.
Judy chairs the Standing Committee on International Trade, the House Liaison Committee, the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, the Parliamentary Friends of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, the Parliamentary Friends of Falun Gong, and the former past Chair of Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and the Canada-Turkey Parliamentary Association. Judy was recognized as the recipient in the Best Mentor Category of Maclean’s Parliamentarians of the Year awards in 2017 and 2018.
Judy has always said that the best thing any Member of Parliament can do is finding something that you care about, put your time into that issue, and you will find yourself a part of a team that is advancing that agenda and Judy is doing just that with her work in both Ottawa and Toronto.
